Reverse osmosis membranes have high removal rates for almost all solutes, while nanofiltration membranes only have removal rates for specific solutes. The pore size of the nanofiltration membrane is more than 1 nm, generally 1 to 2 nm. It mainly removes solute particles about one nanometer, and the molecular weight cut off is 200-1000 Daltons. Almost all reverse osmosis membranes are made of polyamide, while nanofiltration membrane materials can be made of various materials, such as cellulose acetate, cellulose acetate-triacetate, sulfonated polysulfone, sulfonated polyethersulfone, aromatic polyamide composites and Inorganic materials, etc. Generally, a polymer electrolyte is formed on the surface of the nanofiltration membrane, so it often has a strong negative charge.
